About Company:
Wirecutter is the best product recommendation service in the U.S. We care deeply about obsessively testing and researching thousands of products every year to recommend the best of everything, saving readers time and stress in figuring out what to buy.
Whatever sort of thing you need—tableware or TV or air purifier—we make shopping for it easy by telling you the best one to get. Our recommendations are made through vigorous reporting, interviewing, and testing by teams of veteran journalists, scientists, and researchers.
We pride ourselves on following rigorous journalistic standards and ethics, and we maintain editorial independence from our business operations. Our recommendations are always made entirely by our editorial team without input from our revenue team, and our writers and editors are never made aware of any business relationships.

About Work:

It’s why we have a newsroom that’s 1,700 strong and sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description
About the position
Wirecutter is seeking an associate staff writer to cover games and hobbies. This person will be the main researcher, tester, and reporter on this beat. They will be responsible for maintaining existing long-form guides and creating new reviews and other content in the form of how-to articles, blog posts, and newsletters related to games, puzzles, hobbies, and crafts. Games can include anything from card games to strategy games; our craft and hobby coverage areas include telescopes, sewing machines, and electronic cutting machines.
The ideal candidate is someone who looks forward to board game night, but has a ready critical eye for the strategy and design behind the fun and can consider the perspective of players from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. In addition to a passion for tabletop games and puzzles, you should also be able to learn and explain more technical hobbyist gear like consumer-level robots, 3D printers, and photography drones to our readers.
A successful person in this role will be comfortable collaborating across teams and functions, and should also thrive on working independently—researching, testing, writing, and responding to edits. This role reports to the team’s senior editor and has the potential to be remote.
• Research, report, and write long-form guides and short-form posts on your beat
• Collaborate with editors and other writers to create test plans, make pick recommendations, and move ideas from pitch to publish
• Follow developments in the game and hobbies category and pitch both short-form pieces and long-form guides that fall under the section
• May be required to attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas
• Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans
• Perform related work as assigned
• At least one year of experience writing professionally. (Significant experience on the college level may be acceptable.) We’re looking for an enthusiastic, open-minded reporter. Experience writing in-depth how-to guides is valuable, as is experience covering products or services—especially involving hands-on or lab testing
• An understanding of why one would feel a need to deeply research a purchase, and an ability to explain why one product is better than another in a natural, accessible, and detailed way
• Comfort gathering large amounts of data, organizing it in spreadsheets, and probing the work for missing information and inaccuracies. Familiarity with Excel, Airtable, or data visualization (charts, graphs, or other ways to present data) is also a plus
• An inherent skepticism of marketing claims, a science-based approach to research, and a commitment to high standards of reporting and accuracy
• Empathy for the frustrated or confused reader. We are not writing only for the experienced enthusiast, but for everyone who cares about spending their money wisely and buying the right thing the first time
• Adept at finding ways to get in touch with product managers, researchers, engineers, and other experts
• Ability to work collaboratively and patiently process multiple rounds of edits, as well as to manage deadlines on multiple projects at once
• Ability to communicate regularly on Slack and in video conferences with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones
Please include your résumé/CV, a cover letter, and any writing samples you may want to submit with your application. You can only upload one file in the “Résumé/CV” box, so you should combine and upload your résumé, cover letter, and any other materials as one file.
