ABOUT THE PUBLICATION INITIATIVE:
The de Beaumont Foundation partners with leading publishers to produce high-quality, authoritative books across the spectrum of public health practice. The books reflect the needs, interests, and goals of today’s public health professionals. The Foundation is seeking a contractor to serve as the Editorial Project Manager to manage the development and distribution of our published and upcoming books. This is an unparalleled opportunity for the contractor to apply, develop, and strengthen skills in both health and publishing.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
The Editorial Project Manager will report to the Director of Communications and be charged with managing all aspects of the book editorial process, including (but not limited to): scheduling and facilitating meetings with authors, editors, and publishers, developing editorial project and task plans, developing and applying style guides, copyediting, and collaboration with de Beaumont, authors, editors, and publishers.
The ideal candidate is a professional with expertise in project management, an exceptional writer/editor, and an interest in book publishing and/or public health. This position is ideal for a candidate who has a particular interest and strong skills in technical writing, copyediting, and proofreading. They will be confident and experienced in long-term project management, and the ability to simultaneously coordinate activities across many projects and with many collaborators. This position also offers an exciting opportunity for professional growth and as a writer, including potential opportunities to co-author chapters.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage all aspects of the Foundation’s book publication process, including tasks and activities related to:
• Pre-production: Draft book proposals; incorporate feedback from authors and staff; review chapter objectives; use Microsoft forms to gather key author information (including bios, degrees, affiliations, etc.); schedule and lead regular meeting times for staff and publishing partners; communicate regular updates to authors, publishers, and staff; copyediting chapters (including comprehensive review, editing, and checking of citations to ensure accuracy and correct format); collaborating with authors to answer logistical and content questions; assisting with permissions acquisition; managing all chapter drafts in SharePoint to maintain version control; managing contract signatures for any potential subventions for books and external contractors; and tracking and drafting acknowledgements). The Editorial Project Manager may also write as an author, co-author. and/or ghostwriter.
• Production: Coordinate with publishers to meet deadlines; synthesize and provide feedback to graphic designers; review all drafts and proofs; track all deliverables; partner with publisher and the de Beaumont communications team to develop marketing plans; and provide information and text to support the book’s launch and ongoing marketing.
• Post-production: Support, create content for, and project manage book marketing; coordinate the process of enlisting partners to review/endorse books; review and help develop marketing language for the de Beaumont website, social media channels, toolkits, and other communications; coordinate with authors’ organizations to amplify the book’s visibility; and track book sales with information from publishers.
WHO YOU ARE:
This role is ideal for a freelance consultant with a background and/or interest in health writing, scholarly publishing, communications, copyediting, and related fields.
• BA or BS in health-related or English-related fields.
• 2-3 years of relevant professional experience.
• Copyediting/editing and proofreading expertise and experience.
• Project management experience preferred, including using online file sharing and project management systems.
• Familiarity with various style manuals, such as Chicago, AMA, MLA., etc.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects, manage time efficiently, and adjust plans and deadlines as needed.
• Demonstrated self-motivation.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Proven ability to thrive in deadline-driven work environment, set priorities, and creatively problem-solve.
